"History and Refinement of Cue Sticks"
When the game of billiards originated (no one knows the exact date but it is believed to have been in Medieval times) cue sticks looked nothing like the highly elaborate ones we use today. Players used a "mace" which was in essence a crooked staff with a large head at one end. This crude instrument was used to push, rather than shoot the ball forward. You must remember billiards was originally played outdoors on grass. Eventually the game moved indoors, first to the floor and then to a table (which proved to be more comfortable). Players quickly realized that by turning the mace around and using the narrow end of the handle, they could strike the ball with a lot more precision. Around 1800 the first leather tip was used, which lead to the use of chalk about 20 years later.
Today's cue sticks are turned on a lathe and utilize woods such as maple, cocobolo and ebony, just to name a few. Many have beautiful inlays of mother of pearl, malachite, turquoise or coral. As the saying goes, "We've come a long way baby".
